Earn extra income working from home.
Hello, we are Cormie and Gwen from Kirkcaldy.Returning to the job market after an accident meant Cormie had to take jobs that were insecure and we regularly faced the prospect of him “signing on”.
With three young children to consider, we decided the uncertainty of not knowing how long this job would last was too great.
We invested some money, bought three Bouncy Castles and started our own business.
We thought this great as we could control the booking times to allow Cormie to take the lead role in caring for the children whilst I concentrated on my nursing career. We took year round bookings because the castles could be put inside halls, but the fickleness of the Scottish weather meant the income was not dependable. But the bills still needed to be paid.
I worked shifts and although the children were growing up, Cormie still needed to be at home outside school hours, so the job market was virtually non-existent for him.
Then we got a flier through the door and barely gave it a second glance but it never quite made its way to the bin. One day it was there again at the top of the pile of papers and we thought why not at least listen.
In hindsight it was absolutely the right decision, but at the time we both sat and listened with great scepticism and it wasn’t until a number of weeks later, after many an uncertain “should we” “what if” “it can’t be that good” discussion, that we decided to go for it as we knew we needed just that little bit of extra income to help us out.
In this business you work for yourself, so the flexibility meant we could work around the Castle bookings. However, the penny eventually dropped and we realised that what we needed was the flexibility for the family, not the lifting of 50 kg Castles in and out of the car so we sold up.
Now, although you work for yourself, you don’t work by yourself. We have found there is always plenty of help and assistance.
The business has provided us with family friendly work flexibility as well as an income and that was exactly what we were looking for.
It’s a funny old world, but as our needs change so will our business. What more could you ask from being your own boss?
